This is an overview of studies concerning the linguistic situation of Eastern Africa in reference to the inter-relationships among the various Languages and their extent, as well as to both official and informal patterns of usage. The three which make up what is traditionally called East Africa--Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda--receive more detailed attention.
