^{page 70 note 1} See the references to piracy in a treaty between Rhodes and Hierapytna dating probably from the end of the third century B.C. (Collitz-Bechtel 3749, Michel 21); and the complaint of the Hierapytnians, in a letter quoted by the Magnesian arbitrators, that a ship sailing from Leuke had committed some act of war in their territory; at this time Leuke seems to have been occupied by Praisians or Stalitai, and the Hierapytnians in lodging the complaint admitted the title of Itanos to the island. Sylloge 3, 686, 11. 122 ff. The treaty speaks of Hierapytna's ‘legitimate revenues from the sea.’ Rhodes is to help Hierapytna ‘against any king or dynast who may attack her,’ perhaps a reference to the Egyptian king's support of the claims of Itanos.
