L'interaction de la lumière et de la température ainsi que l'effet de la photopériode sur la croissance de Chlorella sorokiniana sont étudiés en milieu fini et en conditions nutritives non limitantes. Le taux maximal de croissance (2,7 j-1) est enregistrée à la température de 35°C, sous une intensité de 300 µE.m-2.s-1 et en éclairement continu. L'ensemble des données est repris sous la forme d'un modèle mathématique qui permet d'estimer le taux de croissance de la culture en fonction des conditions environnementales.

Description de Parastenocaris bulgarica n.sp., récoltée dans la grotte "Douchnica" au nord-ouest de la Bulgarie.

Zooplankton samples were collected over a 21-month period in five floodplain lakes of the Orinoco River in orderto establish zooplankton species composition, abundance patterns, and biomass and their relationships with the patterns of inundations and lake morphometry. 60 rotifer taxa were identified. This group was generally more abundant thancopepods and cladocerans (mean : 73,4 % of total zooplankton). Common and abundant rotifer species included K. americana, K. cochlearis, B. mirus, B. gessneri, P. vulgaris and F. longiseta. Copepods were dominated by nauplii (mean : 73,8 % of total copepod stages). Cladocerans were scarce and dominated by M. minuta, C. cornuta and D. spinulosum.Most frequent and abundant zooplankton species were euplanktonic with a dominance of filter feeders and microphagous detritivores. Mean zooplankton density in all lakes ranged from 340 ind./l to 3 486 ind./l. Biomass ranged from 71,1 µg.l (dw) to 432,8 µg/l. Rotifers accounted for 64,7 % of the total mean zooplankton biomass in three lakes whilecopepods accounted for 57,8 % of the biomass in two lakes. Both density and biomass were markedly seasonal withhighest mean values at low waters. Mean density in the lakes was 100 times higher than in the Orinoco main stem. Lakeswith highest variabilities in surface area and water depths showed highest zooplankton densities. The type of connection (direct or indirect) established between the lakes and the major source of the water also seemed important to interpret the productivity of floodplain lakes.

L'application d'une analyse multivariée (AFC) à 4 descripteurs synthétiques de la colonne d'eau et du sédiment nous a fourni une distribution dans le plan factoriel, des 18 lacs de notre échantillon. A partir de celle-ci, 4 types de milieux ont pu être définis.La projection, en éléments supplémentaires dans le plan de l'analyse des variables du milieu, des effectifs de 26 espèces de mollusques a permis d'étudier les concordances entre types de systèmes et profils des espèces à 4 classes de profondeur : 0-1, 3-5, 10-15 et ≥ 20 m.Affinité et tolérance particulières des espèces pour chaque type de lac sont définis.A l'échelle d'un écosystème lacustre, on observe que ses capacités d'oxygénation et la teneur en matière organique de ses sédiments jouent un rôle essentiel dans la distribution des espèces, celles-ci présentant une sensibilité différentielle vis-à-vis de ces deux facteurs, en fonction de la profondeur.

Eight surface-living insect species, two gyrinid beetles and six heteropteran bugs, were studied in 27 pools in a Tenerifestream. Gyrinus urinator was on average the most abundant species whereas Velia lindbergi was the most widely distributed one. Gyrinid abundance (numbers per pool), but not density (numbers per square metre), was positively associated with pool size and depth. In contrast, the densities of the bugs Velia lindbergi and Hydrometra stagnorum decreased with pool size. Both the number of species and individuals increased with pool area. Widely distributed species were represented with higher average densities than species with a more restricted distribution. Contrary to theory, there was a positive relationship between mean adult body size and density within the guild.

La partie centrale du Bénin est connue pour être propice à la transmission de la dracunculose, probablement en raisondes conditions particulières du milieu naturel de cette région. Pour vérifier cette hypothèse, une étude visant à corrélerla densité des Cyclopides hôtes intermédiaires de D. medinensis avec les variables chimiques et physico-chimiques du milieu aquatique (température, pH , oxygène dissous, conductivité, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnésium, chlorures, carbonates et silice) a été menée dans 53 points d'eau infectieux. A part quelques réserves concernant la température, les paramètres étudiés ne présentent aucune corrélation évidente avec la densité de Cyclopides, du moins lorsque les facteurs sont considérés isolément. En revanche, grâce à l'intégration de différentes composantes du milieu aquatique permettant d'identifier le minéral en équilibre chimique avec ces eaux, les auteurs ont pu montrer que les eaux de la plupart des sites choisis sont en équilibre avec des argiles voisines des Montmorillonites, regroupées sous le terme général de Smectites. Ces types argileux résultent souvent de processus de pédogénèse, conditionnés par le contexte géologique et le mode de drainage. L'interprétation de certains traits du paysage permettrait de prévoir les points d'eau à haut risque de transmission.

A field and laboratory investigation of the food and feeding behavior of larvae of the potamanthid mayfly Anthopotamusverticis (Say) was conducted from 1989 to 1991 on a population from the Tippecanoe River, Indiana (USA). Gutcontent analyses indicated that all size classes of larvae are detritivores, with over 95 % of food consisting of fine detritalparticles. Videomacroscopy indicated that all size classes of larvae are filter feeders, able to utilize both active depositfilter feeding and passive seston filter feeding cycles in their interstitial microhabitat. Deposit filter feeding initially incorporates the removal of loosely deposited detritus with the forelegs. Seston filter feeding initially incorporates filteringby long setae on the forelegs and palps. Mandibular tusks are used to help remove detritus from the foreleg setae. ASEM examination of filtering setae indicated they are hairlike and bipectinate, being equipped with lateral rows of setules.The results show that previous assumptions that potamanthid larvae were collector/gatherers are erroneous. Theresults are applicable to congeners, and all potamanthids, including Palearctic and Oriental elements, are hypothesizedto be filter feeders, differing only in some details of behavior.

The generic diagnosis of Euryhapsis Oliver and the description of E. cilium Oliver are augmented. E. fuscipropessp.n. is described as male imago and shown to be close to E. cilium. The systematic position of the genera related toBrillia Kieffer and Eurycnemus van der Wulp is discussed. A review and a key to male and female imagines of generaof the Brillia group with single gonostyli are given. The generic diagnoses of the genera Irisobrillia Oliver, TokyobrilliaKobayashi & Sasa, and Pseudobrillia Niitsuma are augmented or emended. The description of the female imago of T. longicosta Oliver is augmented. T. anderseni sp. n. from Tanzania is described as male and female imago, the description of the male imago of I. Tamamegaseta augmented and the female described. The description of the male imago of P. komorii Niitsuma is augmented.

Trois nouvelles espèces d'Harpacticoïdes : Elaphoidella cavernicola n.sp., E. balkanica n.sp. et E. pandurskyi n.sp., découvertes dans les eaux cavernicoles de Bulgarie sont décrites.

L'imago ♂ de Tinodes aravil, espèce nouvelle du Portugal, est décrite. Elle est isolée dans le cadre du genre par la forme des gonopodes de même que par la conformation du complexe phallique.

L'étude de la structure et de la typologie ichtyenne a été réalisée dans trois bras morts de la Garonne de 1988 à 1990.Les populations piscicoles ont été échantillonnées en utilisant deux méthodes de pêche complémentaires : l'Echantillonnage Ponctuel d'Abondance (E.P.A.) par pêche électrique et la pêche aux filets. Les échantillons obtenus par E.P.A. constituent la base de données principale pour cette étude.Les peuplements ichtyques de ces trois bras morts sont dominés par les cyprinidés et présentent une forte similitudeglobale entre eux. Cette similitude, d'autant plus importante qu'il existe une communication plus large en aval avec lefleuve, traduit une forte interaction avec ce dernier et l'existence d'échanges migratoires fréquents.Les espèces présentes dans les bras morts ont été séparées en groupes de tailles correspondant chacun aux principaux stades de développement. Il a été recherché les relations entre la présence de chaque espèce à chaque stade d'une part et, les caractéristiques de milieu et les phénomènes saisonniers d'autre part. L'analyse factorielle des correspondances conduit à distinguer trois types d'habitats (groupes spatials) possédant chacun des peuplements qui leur sont propres.La bouvière, ainsi que les juvéniles de grands cyprinidés préfèrent les zones peu profondes à proximité de végétationaquatique où se trouvent les substrats à granulométrie fine (limon-vase). Le second type d'habitat concerne surtout lavégétation aquatique semi-immergée ; il accueille favorablement les espèces carnassières de petites tailles (perche-soleil, perche et black-bass). Enfin, les rives à pente moyenne ou forte en bordure des zones profondes sur substrats graviers/galets, favorisent les populations d'adultes.L'abondance de ces trois groupes de poissons évolue dans le temps selon trois grandes tendances : recrutement estivalet automnal de juvéniles dans les bras morts, prépondérance hivernale d'individus immatures des cyprinidés et entréed'adultes dans les bras morts au printemps.

Un deuxième inventaire des Chironomidés du Maroc est donné. 87 taxa, la plupart identifiés à l'espèce, sont ajoutésà la première liste portant à 223 le total des espèces actuellement connues du Maroc.La majorité a une large répartition paléarctique ; 7 espèces ont une distribution afrotropicale intéressante ; 10 espècespeuvent être considérées comme des endémiques de la région Sud-Ouest paléarctique.

Un système d'élevage de Chironomus riparius Meigen a été mis en place sur le chenal d'amenée du rejet du 3e bassin de la station d'épuration par lagunage de Baraqueville dans le département de l'Aveyron. Un suivi hebdomadaire des principaux facteurs physico-chimiques, sur une période d'un an, a permis de définir les caractéristiques et le fonctionnement de ce système d'élevage. 51 kg de PF de larves ont été récoltés durant 183 jours d'exploitation (mai à octobre) soit 1,77 kg de PS ha-1 an-1. La température, la teneur en O2 dissous et le taux de sédimentation sont les principaux facteurs susceptibles d'influencer la production.

L'étude comparée du régime alimentaire et du rythme d'activité de 4 espèces du genre Haplochromis, représentant, au lac Ihema, 27,9 % du poids total des captures par pêches expérimentales montre que chacune présente une niche écologique distincte permettant d'éviter une compétition trophique importante. Ainsi Haplochromis (Haplochromis) sp. se nourrit, en zone pélagique, de larves de Chaoboridae près de la surface et pendant la nuit. Ces larves sont aussi ingérées au large par H. (Gaurochromis) sp, mais plutôt pendant la journée et dans la vase du fond du lac. H. (Paralabidochromis) sp. est un benthogphage spécialisé dans la consommation des Chironomidae et des Oligochètes en zone côtière.Enfin, H. (Harpagochromis) sp. est un ichtyophage confirmé.

All English populations of Arctic charr are found in the Lake District (northwest England). There are at least four races of charr in Windermere, the largest natural lake in England, with the north and south basins of the lake each containing two distinct races that spawn in autumn and spring respectively. Three methods have been used to estimate levels of the charr stocks ; namely gill-netting each November (1939-1991) for autumn spawners in the north basin, anglers' catches from both basins (1966-1991), echo-survey data from both basins (July 1989 - December 1991). An increase in gill-net catches from 1945 to 1965 was associated with a cull of larger pike, Esox lucius L. ; since 1965, catches have fluctuated around a high mean level. There was good, if not excellent, agreement between the anglers' catches and the gill-net catches. The ratio of anglers' catches in the north and south basins showed that catches have been relatively low in the south basin since 1984. Although there has also been an increase in brown trout, Salmo trutta L., taken by the charr anglers since 1984 in the south basin, this increase was not responsible for the lower charr catches. When estimates of fish densities with an echo sounder were restricted to fish > 20 cm and depths down to 20 m, this being roughly the stock available to charr anglers, there was good agreement between monthly estimates and anglers' catches, especially in the north basin. The echo-sounder data confirmed the higher numbers in the north basin, and lower numbers in winter in both basins. The three different methods therefore provided comparable data on the fluctuations in levels of charr stocks in Windermere. Possible reasons for these fluctuations are discussed briefly.

Les préférences alimentaires des gardons du lac de Pareloup ont été mises en évidence par l'analyse de leurs contenus intestinaux de janvier à juillet 1990. Les spectres alimentaires ont été établis grâce à l'indice de poids qui a permis de visualiser une hiérarchie des proies en fonction de la classe de taille et de la saison. Ces spectres montrent que les gardons de 10 à 21 cm ont une alimentation à base de détritus et de zooplancton alors que les individus plus âgés sont détritivores.Il existe une variation saisonnière du régime des gardons : les détritus dominent en hiver ; ils sont progressivementremplacés par le zooplancton (Cladocères) et, en quantité moindre, par les macroinvertébrés (Chironomidae) à partirde mars.Le phytoplancton (Diatomophycées) est ingéré en grande quantité, mais sa contribution pondérale est toujours faible.Les gardons de Pareloup se nourrissent activement pendant toute la période d'étude et de façon assez opportuniste.

The compositon, abundance and biomass of the benthic fish fauna were studied along a 6 km stretch of the GuariticoRiver. This water course is located in the western plains of Venezuela and belongs to the Apure River floodplain system.Monthly collections from June, 1990 to January, 1991 were made by means of a small trawling apparatus rigged todugout canoes according to the design of López-Rojas et al. (1984). 42 fish species were identified with a dominanceof species from the orders Siluriformes and Gymnotiformes. The fish assemblage differed markedly from other Venezuelan river systems. Seasonally, higher diversity and evenness were observed at the high water phase while the abundance, relative biomass and CPUE were higher at low water.

Nine biological indices based on the macroinvertebrate community inhabiting rivers have been calculated in order to find out which of them is more appropriate to evaluate the qualitative status of the running water for public environmental authorities. The BMWP' score (Alba-Tercedor & Sánchez-Ortega 1988) has been chosen because it is both accurate and precise, and easy to calculate. Some problems derived from sampling strategies are discussed.

Spatial-temporal changes in the physico-chemical characteristics of the Agura river (Basque Country and Cantabrian region, Spain) were studied over six months, a period that included a long period of unusual drought and the return to more normal hydrological conditions. The chemical composition of the water was affected by water flow. It wasinfluenced either directly through the drainage characteristics at the level of different parts of the surrounding basin,or indirectly through the action of biotic communities on their environment. From these results, some spatial and/ortemporal models have been developed for the dynamics of the different variables in this study.

A limnological study was performed out, over 8 years from 1979 to 1986, in a shallow recently created sand-pit lake,Lake Créteil (Paris suburb, France). The lake is mainly supplied by phreatic waters. Typical of shallow waters, thermal stratification which occurred from May to October was intermittently broken by wind, leading to high seasonal fluctuations and allowing a reoxygenation of the total water column. The interannual development of the lake was characterized by a regular increase in transparency (from 1 m in 1979 to 2.7 m in 1985) which was partly due to not only stabilization of the bottom sediment and the banks, but also to a reduction of the biological component. A decrease in chlorophyll a concentrations resulted from nutrient diversion of domestic inputs collected through the rainwater pipe cominginto the lake. The rapid restoration of water quality shows that this small artificial lake is very sensitive to human interventions.
