In two experiments, 165 dairy cows were allotted to groups given post-partum diets ad libitum containing either 150 g (LP) or 190 to 200 g (HP) crude protein (CP) per kg dry matter (DM).

In experiment 1, which lasted 21 weeks after calving, cows were given pre-partum two amounts of energy (National Research Council (NRC) recommended amount v. 1·4 × NRC recommended amount). Pre-partum amounts of energy did not affect DM intake, milk yield or milk composition. Protein intake, including that for maintenance, was 84 and 116 g CP per kg milk in the LP and HP groups, respectively.

During 2 to 6 weeks after calving the HP concentration in a diet containing 850 g concentrates and 150 g hay per kg, decreased DM intake, whereas in a diet containing 650 g concentrates and 350 g hay per kg, the HP concentration increased DM intake. During weeks 12 to 21 after calving, the HP concentration decreased milk yield from 33·0 to 28·7 kg and increased milk fat concentration from 24·1 to 29·3 g/kg. Rumen fluid ammonia-N concentrations were 135 and 200 mg/1 in cows given the LP and HP diet, respectively. Plasma urea-N concentrations were 114 and 172 mg/1 in the same groups, respectively.

In experiment 2, three groups of cows were given, during 15 weeks after calving, diets LP, HP and HP containing soya-bean meal treated with formaldehyde (HPSP). Protein intake, including that for maintenance, was 71, 82 and 86 g CP per kg milk in the three groups, respectively. Mean daily milk yields during 15 weeks after calving were 37·5, 39·2 and 39·3 kg in groups LP, HP and HPSP, respectively. Cows given the LP and HP diets lost, after parturition, 22·5 kg body weight, whereas cows given the HPSP diet lost only 6·0 kg. Rumen fluid ammonia-N concentrations were 95, 175 and 81 mg/1 and plasma urea-N concentrations were 80, 200 and 143 mg/1 in cows given the LP, HP and HPSP diets, respectively. It is concluded that on certain diets high-yielding dairy cows can be given, in addition to that for maintenance, as little as 60 g CP per kg milk. Formaldehyde-treated soya-bean meal may increase milk yield during the first 3 weeks after calving, and reduce body weight loss.

Four groups of 12 cows were fed from between 12 and 18 weeks before calving to achieve condition scores at calving of 2·0 (T) or 3·5 (F). For 20 weeks after calving all cows were offered 10 kg/day of a dairy concentrate (metabolizable energy (ME) 13 MJ/kg dry matter (DM)) containing 74 g undegradable dietary protein (UDP) per kg DM (groups TH and FH) or 45 g/kg DM UDP (groups TL and FL), 2 kg/day sugar-beet pulp, 5 kg/day brewers' grains and hay ad libitum.

Milk yields were similar for all groups over the first 20 weeks of lactation, but slightly lower for cows in group FL than for other cows. Cows in group FH lost condition over the first 15 weeks and cows in group FL lost proportionally more condition over the first 12 weeks of lactation. Cows in groups TH and TL increased in condition slightly over the first 20 weeks of lactation. After calving, cows in groups TH and TL had significantly higher intakes of DM, digestible DM and ME than did cows in groups FH and FL (P < 0·001). Cows in group TL had higher intakes than did cows in group TH.

Groups TH and FH were in negative energy balance until weeks 10 and 11 respectively. Group FL was in negative energy balance between weeks 4 and 7 and group TL was only in negative energy balance in week 5. The biological efficiency of milk production (energy output in milk/energy intake) was 0·37, 0·35, 0·40 and 0·38 for groups FH, FL, TH and TL respectively.

It was concluded that cows which are thin at calving produce more milk directly from food than cows which are fat and are biologically more efficient; higher UDP levels in the diet led to increased negative energy balances but in thin cows this was due to lower food intakes whereas in fat cows this was due to higher milk yields which led to greater losses of condition.

The fat plus protein yield of 70 011 records of pedigree British Friesian/Holstein cows was regressed on various components of their dam's Cow Genetic Index (CGI) in order to obtain the regression coefficients for comparison with the index weights currently used in the calculation of the CGI. For the first and later (2 to 5) lactation components of the CGI, the regression coefficients obtained by analysis were consistent with the tabulated index weights, but the coefficients for the sire component tended in some cases to be lower than the table values. The analysis was repeated using only dams that had widely used sires. The partial regression coefficients for the first and later lactation components were again consistent with the tabulated weights, and the coefficient for the sire component lay within one s.d. of the table values. In all cases, a cow's CGI is shown to take full account of her first and later lactation information and her sire's and dam's transmitting abilities.

Groups of 12 spring-calving cows and their calves were allocated to each of three continuous grazing treatments: cows and calves grazed a 4- to 5-cm sward (LI), cows grazed a 4- to 5-cm sward and their calves grazed an 8- to 10-cm sward (Lh) and cows and calves grazed an 8- to 10-cm sward (Hh). In each case cows and calves grazed separately. Sward height had a large effect on both cow and calf performance and intake. The short swards reduced cow herbage intake proportionately by 0·2 compared with that of the taller sward. Cow live-weight gains were −0·60, −0·59 and 0·42 (s.e.d. 0·103) kg/day on treatments LI, Lh and Hh respectively while calf live-weight gains were 0·80, 0·95 and 1·14 (s.e.d. 0·040) kg/day. Calf milk intakes were 7·05, 5·78 and 9·34 (s.e.d. 0·508) kg/day respectively while daily herbage intakes were 17·2, 22·0 and 19·8 (s.e.d. 1·35) g organic matter per kg live weight for treatments LI, Lh and Hh. There was a negative association between calf herbage and milk organic matter intakes in the treatments where the calves had access to a more generous sward height (treatments Lh and Hh), the regression coefficient being −0·89 (s.e. 0·381), indicating the calves' ability to increase herbage intake in response to a reduction in milk intake. On the LI treatment there was no significant relationship between milk and herbage intakes. The ability of grazing suckled calves to compensate for a reduction in milk intake is thus dependent on sward conditions, and may also depend on herbage digestibility. The increase in herbage intake cannot however compensate fully for a restriction in milk supply.

A simple dynamic model of metabolism in growing beef cattle is described; the scheme is based on carbon and nitrogen fluxes. There are six state variables, three relating to blood metabolite levels and three to body composition. The blood metabolite variables are acetyl-coenzyme A equivalents, glucose equivalents and amino acids, and the body composition ones are ash, lipid and protein. The fluxes in the model are based on nine biochemical transactions, six of which are catabolic and three biosynthetic. The model simulates changes in carcass composition in response to changing nutrient input and gives a measure of agreement with comparative slaughter data. It also highlights the need for more complete data on profiles of nutrient absorption in association with comparative slaughter experiments.

In eight experiments, ewes nursing one or two lambs were offered restricted amounts of concentrate in the range 285 to 605 g dry matter (DM) per day and hay ad libitum, from lambing until day 42 of lactation.

Hay intake increased sharply during the first 2 weeks and reached its maximum during the 5th or the 6th week. Ewes' body weight at lambing, ewes' body-weight change, and milk production (estimated by litter growth rate) were significantly related to hay intake which depended also on breed (Romanov × Limousine ewes eating more than pure Limousine, P < 0·001) and age (mature ewes eating more than old ewes, P < 0·001) but not on number of suckled lambs.

Replacement rate of concentrates for forage increased as lactation progressed (0·53 to 0·86 from first to third fortnight) and varied with hay neutral detergent fibre (NDF) concentration (0·42 or 0·89 for hays with 700 or 500 g NDF per kg DM). Daily hay DM intake decreased by 1·28 g for each gram of hay NDF content increment. The NDF effect was increasingly more important as lactation progressed.

Utilization of present results in formulating diets for lactating ewes is discussed.

Four experiments were carried out on individually penned Finn Dorset and Suffolk × Finn Dorset ewes receiving complete diets of milled hay and concentrates and rationed at various levels below voluntary intake. In the first experiment, 20 non-pregnant non-lactating ewes were each given daily 1·6 kg food and injected intramuscularly with either isotonic saline (control), progesterone plus oestrogen (20 mg + 80 ng per 24 h) to mimic hormone status in pregnancy, bromocriptine (1 mg per 12 h) to suppress plasma prolactin, or thyrotrophin releasing factor (TRF) to elevate plasma concentrations of prolactin and the iodothyronines. Fractional outflow rates of chromium-mordanted fish meal from the rumen were estimated from the rate of excretion of chromium in faeces and were proportionately 0·25 higher for ewes given TRF than for controls (P < 0·025). None of the other treatments had a significant effect on outflow rate.

In experiment 2, fractional outflow rates from the rumen were determined during July (long daylength) and again during December (short daylength) in 12 ewes that had their seasonal pattern of plasma prolactin modified by removal of their anterior cervical sympathetic ganglia. Another 12 sham-operated ewes were used as controls. Neither the seasonal changes in prolactin nor their modification by cervical ganglionectomy significantly affected outflow rate.

Twelve non-pregnant non-lactating ewes were used in the third experiment to test the effects of mid-winter shearing (mean ambient temperature −4°C) on fractional outflow rates from the rumen and on the plasma concentrations of prolactin, thyroxine (T4) and cortisol. Shearing caused a drop in plasma prolactin, gave proportional increases (P < 0·05) of 0·47 and 0·16 in T4 and cortisol respectively and gave a 0·12 increase (P < 0·01) in the outflow rate of chromium-mordanted fish meal from the rumen. The increases in T4, and outflow rate were sustained for at least 2 weeks.

For experiment 4, 22 ewes each suckling two lambs were used in three trials to see if variation between ewes in milk production and in lamb growth rate was correlated with variation in outflow rate from the rumen. The only significant correlation (r = 0·68, P < 0·01) was between outflow rate and lamb growth rate for the eight ewes in trial 1. The results of all four experiments are discussed in relation to the mechanisms by which non-dietary factors, via their effect on the rate of outflow of digesta from the rumen, may alter the quantity of protein reaching the abomasum and the likely significance of this alteration on animal performance.

Exogenous bovine pituitary somatotropin (GH) can influence markedly body composition in fattening lambs. However, neither the effects of biosynthetic somatotropin nor the effects of dose and method of administration have been reported. Fifty Dorset-cross lambs (female and castrated male) were given concentrate ad libitum and treated between 10 and 22 weeks of age with biosynthetic bovine somatotropin either dissolved in buffer and injected subcutaneously (s.c.) in proportion to body weight (0·025, 0·1 or 0·25 mg/kg per day), dissolved in buffer and continuously infused s.c. (0·1 mg/kg per day) or suspended in olive oil and injected s.c. (0·1 mg/kg per day), and compared with 10 untreated control lambs. Somatotropin had little effect on live-weight gain (controls = 228 g/day; final live weight 37 kg), food intake and food conversion efficiency, and only marginally increased the weight of muscle and bone dissected from the shoulder joint. The weights of the major fat depots in the abdominal cavity and of fat dissected from the shoulder joint were linearly related to dose of somatotropin (P < 0·001). Lambs given the highest dose had less visceral fat (1·18 v. 2·84 kg; P < 0·001) and proportionately less fat (285 v. 374 g/kg; P < 0·001) and more muscle (542 v. 447 g/kg) and bone (172 v. 149 g/kg; P < 0·001) in the shoulder joint than control lambs. There was a positive curvilinear relationship (P < 0·01) between clean wool growth (mid-side patch sample) and dose; lambs injected daily with 0·1 mg somatotropin per kg grew one-third more wool than control lambs. Method of administration affected plasma somatotropin profiles but had no significant influence on any of the responses measured. The anabolic actions of somatotropin may have been limited in this experiment by a low sodium concentration in the diet. It is concluded that the lipolytic/anti-lipogenic effect of somatotropin can occur in the absence of conditions conducive to the stimulation of muscle protein deposition and that the response is dose dependent but not influenced by method of administration of the hormone.

In order to determine the relative nutritional value of rapeseed meal (var. Tandem) in comparison with soya-bean meal and fish meal, seven barley-based diets were formulated to provide 13·1 MJ digestible energy and 8·8 g total lysine per kg. They contained soya-bean meal (S), rapeseed meal (R) or fish meal (F) alone, or equal proportions (on a total nitrogen basis) of soya and rapeseed, soya and fish meal, rapeseed and fish meal or soya, rapeseed and fish meal. The study involved 14 pigs growing from 40 to 90 kg, each fitted with a T cannula in the terminal ileum. Dietary treatments were applied during 7-day periods according to a 7 × 7 Latin-square design, replicated twice. The pigs were fed at 12-h intervals. Ileal digesta were collected during two 12-h periods from each pig after adaptation to each diet. Nutrient apparent digestibilities were measured using chromium III oxide as a marker; for diets S, R and F, respectively, values were: dry matter, 0·58, 0·51 and 0·66 (s.e. 0·014); N, 0·72, 0·67 and 0·73 (s.e. 0·011); lysine, 0·79, 0·72 and 0·83 (s.e. 0·010), with a similar relationship between diets for most other amino acids. In general, values for diets containing combinations of the protein supplements were intermediate between those for diets containing the respective single supplements. Following the main trial, seven pigs were given a semi-purified diet containing rapeseed meal as the only protein source; this gave amino acid digestibility values similar to or slightly higher than diet R. Diet R, which contained 375 g rapeseed meal per kg, presented no palatability problem. Rapeseed meal of the quality used in this trial could contribute a substantial proportion of the protein supplement for growing pigs. Its value should be enhanced by formulating diets according to the ileal digestibility of the limiting amino acids.

Sixty entire male pigs between 7 and 28 days and 60 entire male pigs between 28 and 56 days of age were given ad libitum basal diets using peanut meal and wheat gluten with or without dried milk as the protein supplements. The diets contained between 7·0 and 10·7 g lysine per kg. These diets were supplemented with graded additions of synthetic L-lysine hydrochloride.

It was found that the lysine required for maximum performance and nitrogen retention was at least 12·7 g/kg dry matter (DM) between 7 and 28 days of age and not greater than 12 g/kg DM between 28 and 56 days of age. These values are 4·7 and 5·3 g/kg dietary crude protein for the two ages or 0·81 and 0·79 g/MJ digestible energy.

A method is discussed for the calculation of the most economical level of lysine supplementation. This is dependent on the cost of the basal diet and lysine, and the value of the weight gain.

The concentration of free lysine in the blood plasma did not give a clear indication of lysine requirement of the pigs.

Group-housed young growing pigs, given food ad libitum, were exposed to two temperatures, one within thermal neutrality (25°C) and one around the lower critical temperature (15°C). Pigs at 15°C had daily gains reduced by 57 g for 6 days after initial exposure. Food intake was increased significantly after 6 days at 15°C but not at 25°C. Maintenance requirement was increased by 58 kJ/kg M0·75 and energy retained as protein was decreased by 49 kJ/kg M0·75 for the first 6 days after exposure to the treatment of 15°C and thereafter both became equivalent to those of pigs at 25°C afterwards. It is concluded that animals were acclimatized after 6 days exposure.

Twenty-four Landrace × (Landrace × Large White) gilts were randomly allocated at a mean age of 70 days to each of two rearing treatments which were: (1) housing gilts with other gilts but in complete isolation from other pigs; or (2) housing gilts with fence-line contact with a mature boar. At 160 days of age all gilts were relocated, treatment 1 gilts being adjacent to a mature boar for the first time while treatment 2 gilts were adjacent to the same mature boar with which they had had contact during rearing. In addition, the gilts on each treatment were exposed to full contact with this boar for 30 min/day. There were no significant differences between the treatments in age (176 and 185 days) or weight at puberty (81·9 and 82·6 kg), in the interval from relocation and full boar contact to puberty (11 and 16 days) and in ovulation rate at the pubertal oestrus (11·6 and 11·5).

In a second experiment, 72 gilts were reared with fence-line contact with a mature boar and at 160 days of age, half were relocated adjacent to a novel mature boar and the other half remained in the rearing house next to a novel boar with all gilts receiving full boar contact for 30 min/day. Significantly more relocated gilts reached puberty during the experimental period (25/32) than gilts which were only exposed to contact with a novel boar and not relocated (12/31) (P < 0·001) and those relocated gilts were significantly younger (187 v. 225 days; P < 0·001) and lighter (75·4 v. 93·9 kg; P < 0·001) at puberty and the induction interval was significantly shorter (20 v. 89 days; P < 0·001) compared with gilts on the second treatment.

Heterosis for growth rate in pigs is usually expressed, and reviews of European and North American studies have been given by Sellier (1976) and Johnson (1981). Kennedy and Moxley (1980) observed heterosis of 0·044 to 0·067 for weight at 154 days and attributed some of the crossbred advantage to heterosis for resistance to atrophic rhinitis. Similarly, McGuirk, Bourke and Manwaring (1978) attributed some of the heterosis for growth rate in sheep to heterosis for resistance to pneumonia. Although little attention has been paid to interactions between heterosis and health environment, Barlow (1981) concluded from an extensive review of studies involving farm and laboratory animals that heterosis is environment dependent and is enhanced by increased stress. Sellier (1976) commented that it would be useful to examine the degree of heterosis with ‘specific pathogen free’ pigs raised in a healthy environment, and this study examined heterosis for days to 90 kg in Yorkshire × Landrace pigs under three different environments with respect to health conditions.

In a previous experiment with pregnant beef cows (Alawa, Fishwick, Parkins, Hemingway and Aitchison, 1986) when equal amounts of crude protein (CP) were supplied from a range of concentrates providing different amounts of rumen-degraded protein (RDP), the voluntary intake of barley straw dry matter (DM) and the metabolizable energy (ME) obtained from straw were positively and significantly correlated with the intake of RDP. Whilst increasing proportions of rumen-undegraded protein (UDP) have been shown to increase the milk yield of ewes (Robinson, McHattie, Calderon Cortes and Thompson, 1979) the response of lactating beef suckler cows to UDP in terms of milk yield is not clear. There is an increasing interest in the use of peas as a protein supplement but they have not been compared with more conventional protein sources. Accordingly these present experiments were conducted to study the response of lactating beef cows and their calves to proteins from different sources providing different amounts of RDP and UDP.

It is a popular belief, supported by several scientific studies (Vaughan, 1971; McPhee and Laws, 1976; Fredeen and Sather, 1978; Sather and Fredeen, 1982) that leg weakness will diminish in young stock of breeding age after they are transferred from confinement housing to pasture lots. However, Nakano, Aherne and Thompson (1981) working with boars from the Canadian Swine ‘Record of Performance’ (ROP) testing programme found that no improvement in gait resulted after the animals were transferred from confinement housing with solid concrete flooring to pasture lots. The number of animals in the study was limited. All of these reports dealt only with the recovery of pigs from leg weakness and did not include pigs with sound legs at the beginning of the pasture period (approx. 90 kg live weight).

Beef producers no longer emphasize excessive fat deposition in market cattle. Recent research findings in human health suggest that our diets should contain less fat because of the cardiovascular diseases that seem associated with greater intakes of fat. Large-frame cattle slaughtered at the same chronological age as small-frame cattle have leaner carcasses and a correspondingly greater proportion of carcass protein (Arnold, Hentges and Trenkle, 1985). Determining early in life whether a type of cattle will become obese, therefore, would be of great benefit to cattle producers. Arnold et al. (1985) reported that, at 6 months of age, large-frame steers were significantly leaner than small-frame steers.

The potential problems concerning the use of manioc, from the processed roots of cassava (Manihot esculenta), have been reviewed by Oke (1978) and Walker (1983). Although current legislation has ensured that in recent years the levels of cyanogenic glucoside in imported cassava have been negligible (Walker, 1985), there is still conflicting evidence on the maximum level of manioc which can be included in pig diets without adverse effects on digestion and performance. In a previous study (Partridge, 1985), 300 g manioc per kg tended to increase the proportion of energy apparently absorbed from the large intestine compared with lower levels. This may have been partially responsible for some of the digestive upsets found with young pigs by O'Grady and Hanrahan (1979). Evidence of the effect of manioc on performance can be misleading due to palatability problems and therefore lower food intakes (Müller, Chou and Nah, 1975; Papodopoulos, Ziras and Kalaissakis, 1983).
