Summary

Two interesting equine populations have been traditionally raised in the Apullian highlands of the Murge. The Murge horse can be traced back to the spanish occupation of this region and is today known for its potential as a pleasure and riding horse. The donkey of Martina Franca, well-known for its crossbreeding potential to produce hardy mules, is actually an endangered population saved only by the intervention of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry

Traditionnellement, deux races equines interessantes ont ete elevees sur les hautsplateaux des Pouilles et de Murge. On retrouve des signes d'existence du cheval de Murge lorsque l'on remonte a l'epoque de l'occupation espagnole de cette region. De nos jours, ce cheval est connu pour ses qualites en tant que cheval d'agrement et de selle. Lane de Martina Franca, bien connu pour la capacite qu'il a de produire par croisement des mulets resistants, est en fait une race menacee, protegee seulement grace a l'intervention du Ministere Italien de l'Agriculture et des Forets.
