Bitter experience had proved to the Jesuit superiors, especially to Father Vieira, that it was impossible at the time to obtain and enforce legislation in accordance with their desires. Consequently, when new laws on the Indians were passed from 1686 to 1693, the Jesuits, now ready to yield from their former unbending attitude, raised no objections.
