5 U.S., China Expect to Hold New Talks On WTO Accession in October, USTR Says, 16 Int’l Trade Rep. (BNA) 1550 (Sept. 29,1999). China was an original member of the GATT until shortly after the 1949 Chinese revolution and the founding of the PRC. The ousted nationalist government of Chiang Kai-shek, in a communication to the UN Secretary-General sent from Taiwan, formally withdrew from the GATT on behalf of China. Although the PRC has protested the validity of that withdrawal, die PRC has not been regarded as a member of the GATT since May 5,1950, when the withdrawal took effect.
