NOTES

1 A volume reproducing a remarkable series of these illustrations was published in connection with an exhibition put together in 1983 in Germany (the Rhineland), Die Lebenstreppen, Rheinlandverlag, K81n. Every step seems to have had an animal symbolically associated with it. A singular piece of imagery not noted by Burrow.
