This paper examines the dynamic stalling of a finite wing of aspect ratio 3·0 when subject to constant pitch motions up to and beyond stall. In particular, unsteady surface pressure data were obtained at 192 locations on the wing surface and these were then analysed to provide information on the nature and phasing of dynamic stall events in both the chordwise and spanwise directions. It was also possible to obtain sectional force and moment coefficients by integration of the pressures measured on specific chordal arrays. This provided valuable insight into the load distribution on the wing throughout the range of motion. On this basis, it was established that the wing loading distribution was consistent with conventional understanding of steady wing loading up to the incidence at which the dynamic stall vortex was initiated. Beyond this point, the formation and subsequent convection of the vortex structure was found to be strongly three-dimensional but, nevertheless, exhibited many of the features of two-dimensional dynamic stall.

A theoretical study is presented for the investigation of a potential-flow model for enhancing lift over a flat-plate aerofoil experiencing thin aerofoil stall. Rather than suppressing the leading-edge separation, flow is assumed to separate tangentially at the leading edge and made to reattach smoothly at the tip of a forward-facing fence joining the plate tangentially on its upper surface to avoid any unnecessary stagnated flow. The length of the fence and its location from the leading edge form two geometrical parameters. At any positive angle of attack, the resulting bounding streamline emanating from the leading edge and terminating at the tip of the fence is simulated by using suitable mathematical singularities subject to boundary conditions such as attaining a finite velocity at each critical point of the conformal mapping involved, and the condition of finite pressure gradient at reattachment, when applicable. Computational results from varying these two geometrical parameters indicate that the lift from each model is enhanced, as compared with the attached flow model around a simple flat plate and the original separated flow model by Kirchhoff.

An experimental investigation of high frequency combustion instability in a liquid rocket engine of 3kN thrust was conducted. The diagnostic method of detecting combustion instability was based on the measurement of the dynamic pressure following an artificial disturbance in the combustion chamber. Test data spectral analysis was performed by using the stochastic vibration data processing method. Although the engine has demonstrated an absence of tendency to spontaneous instability, insufficient stability of the original engine design was evident during tests with artificial triggers. A Helmholtz type resonator in form of partitioned cavities tuned to a few different, close frequencies was designed and installed in the combustion chamber wall to avoid spontaneous or triggered combustion instability. The experimental results from hot tests with artificial triggers confirmed the high efficiency of the applied acoustic resonator.

It is well known that passive vortex generators can be very effective in controlling separation by ‘re-energising’ the low momentum fluids at the boundary layers. They have been used extensively in many practical aerodynamic applications; both in external and internal flows. Typical examples include aerofoil stall alleviation and engine face distortion control in the jet aircraft intake during high angles of incidence. The general flow feature behind a vortex generator is that a pair of contra-rotating streamwise vortices would be formed which will significantly strengthen the flow at the boundary layers. However, the rationale for successful vortex generator designs is often poorly understood. In many cases, vortex generator designs have even been shown to be arbitrary. Anderson et al and Reichert and Wendt used rectangular fin and tapered fin vortex generators respectively, to eliminate the internal flow separation of S-shaped intake ducts. Both geometries were found to be equally effective. Weng and Guo successfully applied aerofoil shape type of vortex generators to suppress the swirl on the engine face of an S-shaped intake duct at high angles of incidence.

The prediction and characterisation of the limit cycle oscillation (LCO) behaviour of non-linear aeroelastic systems has become of great interest recently. However, much of this work has concentrated on determining the existence of LCOs. This paper concentrates on LCO stability. By considering the energy present in different limit cycles, and also using the harmonic balance method, it is shown how the stability of limit cycles can be determined. The analysis is then extended to show that limit cycles can be controlled, or even suppressed, by the use of suitable excitation signals. A basic control scheme is developed to achieve this, and is demonstrated on a simple simulated non-linear aeroelastic system.
