High fidelity modelling and simulation are prerequisites for ensuring confidence in decision making during aircraft design and development, including performance and handling qualities, control law developments, aircraft dynamic loads analysis, and the creation of a realistic simulation environment. The techniques of system identification provide a systematic framework for ‘enhancing’ a physics–based simulation model derived from first principles and aircraft design data. In this paper we adopt a frequency domain approach for model enhancement and fidelity improvement of a baseline FLIGHTLAB Bell 412 helicopter model developed at the University of Liverpool. Predictability tests are based on responses to multi–step control inputs. The techniques have been used to generate one, three, and six degree-of-freedom linear models, and their derivatives and predictability are compared to evaluate and augment the fidelity of the FLIGHTLAB model. The enhancement process thus involves augmenting the simulation model based on the identified parameters. The results are reported within the context of the rotorcraft simulation fidelity project, Lifting Standards, involving collaboration with the Flight Research Laboratory (NRC, Ottawa), supported with flight testing on the ASRA research helicopter.

In this paper the computed flow and performance characteristics at low angle-of-attack (AOA) of an integrated diverterless supersonic inlet (DSI) are presented. The subsonic characteristics are evaluated at M∞ = 0·8 while the supersonic characteristics are evaluated at M∞= 1·7, which is near the design Mach number for the intake. In addition to the external flow features, the internal intake duct flow behaviour is also evaluated. The results of this study indicate effective boundary layer diversion due to the ‘bump’ compression surface in both subsonic and supersonic regimes. At M∞ = 1·7, the shockwave structure (oblique/normal shockwave) on the ‘bump’ compression surface and intake inlet is satisfactory at design (critical) mass flow rate. The intake duct flow behaviour at subsonic and supersonic conditions is generally consistent with ‘Y’ shaped intake duct of the present configuration. The secondary flow structure inside the duct has been effectively captured by present computations. The computed intake total pressure recovery at M∞ = 1·7 exhibits higher-than-conventional behaviour at low mass flow ratios, which is attributed to unique inlet design. Overall computed subsonic and supersonic total pressure recovery characteristics are satisfactory under the evaluated conditions and are also in agreement with wind tunnel test data.

This paper concerns aircraft system identification and, in particular, the process of aerodynamic model structure determination. Its application to experimental data from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is also described. The procedure can be particularly useful for determining an aerodynamic model for aircraft with unconventional airframe configurations, which some unmanned aircraft tend to have. Two model structure determination techniques are outlined. The first is the well-established stepwise regression method, while the second is an adaptation of an existing frequency response approach which instead utilises maximum likelihood estimation. Example applications of the methods are presented for two data sources. The first is a set of UAV flight test data and the second is data recorded from dynamic wind tunnel tests on a UAV configuration. For both examples, the model structures determined using stepwise regression and maximum likelihood analysis matched one another, suggesting that the maximum likelihood approach and the chosen thresholds for its statistical metrics were reliable for the data being analysed.

Results of a series of oscillatory dynamic stall tests of a rotor aerofoil fitted with a pulsed, trailing-edge flap are presented. Flap deflection amplitude, motion profile, duration and starting phase were investigated to assess the potential of the flap for mitigating the adverse effects of dynamic stall, which is one of the limiting factors for rotor blades on the retreating side of a helicopter rotor. The tests were a continuation of the investigations by Ref. 1 who used a computational fluid dynamics method on a symmetric NACA section, and our results broadly confirm their conclusions by experimental test, using a modern rotor section. The results presented in this paper also confirm the observations from experimental work by Refs 2 and 3, which were undertaken at lower Reynolds number and with a larger flap. In the present study, the flap mitigates the high negative pitching moment and negative pitch damping seen in dynamic stall by strong suction being generated over the aerofoil lower surface, and it is the modification to the lower surface shape by the flap that creates this effect. The dynamic stall vortex acts to enhance the lower surface suction, and careful flap phasing and flap motion profile shaping can make the control more effective.

The light gyroplane is a class of aircraft popular with amateur constructors and pilots. As a result, there is limited design guidance available since formal technical resources are not available to the community. Rule-of-thumb, intuition and historical experience tend to influence design evolution. Empennage configuration is a prime example of this paradigm, and the objective of this Paper is to explore those factors that influence horizontal stabiliser effectiveness with particular reference to dynamic stability. An individual-blade rotorcraft mathematical model is coupled with a vorticity-based flowfield code, necessary to capture the highly interactional aerodynamics associated with empennage location at the rear of the airframe. A parametric study of horizontal stabiliser location shows that maximum benefit from the energising influence of the propeller slipstream is obtained if the surface is placed near the edge of the propeller wake. Further, traditional design parameters such as tail volume ratio offer an incomplete indicator of empennage effectiveness without consideration of airframe blockage and propeller slipstream. It is concluded that empennage sizing calculations can be straightforward, but require due consideration of the impact of the close-coupled nature of the vehicle on stabilising surface aerodynamic effectiveness.

Generic wrap-around shape optimisation technology is presented, and is applied to a helicopter rotor in hover, using compressible CFD as the aerodynamic model. An efficient domain element shape parameterisation method is used as the surface control and deformation method, and is linked to a radial basis function global interpolation, to provide direct transfer of domain element movements into deformations of the design surface and the CFD volume mesh. This method is independent of mesh type and size, and optimisation independence from the flow solver is achieved by obtaining sensitivity information for an advanced parallel gradient-based algorithm by finite-difference. The method is applied here to a two-bladed hovering rotor, with transonic tip speed, comparing the effects of global twist parameters and more local planform parameters. Significant torque reductions are achieved in both cases, and it is shown that using only three global twist parameters are extremely effective. Using 63 local and global parameters, large geometric changes are demonstrated, with both induced power and wave drag reduced.
