A finite element analysis has been carried out to simulate the effect of birdstrike on concave curved metal stiffened panels representative of engine intakes. A simplified static analysis approach was adopted including the effects of non-linear material response and large displacements. Loading was by means of an equivalent pressure derived from experimental results of bird impacts on rigid plates. Good agreement was obtained between predicted and measured bird impact velocities to cause penetration of the structure for a range of panel thicknesses, curvatures and impact angles.
