An All-Day Symposium on Cheap Short-Range Air Transport was held by the Society in the Lecture Theatre on 4th May 1965. The Chair was taken by Professor M. J. Lighthill, DSc, FRS, FRAeS, Hon FAIAA. Five short papers were given: Some Factors Affecting Fares, A. L. Courtney, RAE, Farnborough; An Airline View, R. H. Whitby, BSc, ARCS, D1C, FRAeS, BEA; Steps Towards Lower Operating Costs with Conventional Jet Transports, C. J. Hamshaw Thomas, MA, AFRAeS, Transport Analysis Service Ltd (formerly BAC); Possibilities of Cost Reduction with All-Wing Aircraft, G. H. Lee, BSc, ARCS, DIC, FRAeS, Handley Page Ltd; and Prospects of Lower Airline and Airport Costs, A. H. Stratford, BSc(Eng), FRAeS, Consultant (formerly Hawker Siddeley International). Each paper was followed by a discussion and there was a general discussion at the end followed by a summing up by the Chairman. The Discussions have been summarised by J. A.
