Optimum Tapers for Eccentrically Loaded Ties

Published online by Cambridge University Press:  04 July 2016

Summary:—

A long untapered tie under tension exhibits localised stress concentrations when one end is subjected to a flexural rotation. These stress, concentrations can be avoided by tapering the tie. The optimum tapers for ties of circular and rectangular section are determined in this paper, and the resultant flexural stiffnesses are compared with those of untapered ties. Results are of interest in the design of certain satellite model support systems.
