A general overview is followed by sections concerned with the poor law, the life of the labourer, migration and emigration, housing, access to land and education, and the Agricultural Labourers' Union.

The volume begins with a tribute In Memoriam to Harold Owen White, secretary of BHRS 1965-1980.
