Most of the essays in this volume are the outgrowth of the International Conference on the Unobserved Economy that was convened at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) during the summer of 1982. The editor wishes to express a debt of gratitude to the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study for its outstanding institutional support and to the Liberty Fund for its generous financial support for the conference. The Liberty Fund's executive director, Dr. Neil McLeod, helped with the planning of the conference program.
The success of the conference is owed to the support of its sponsors, the enthusiasm of the participants, and to competent and friendly help offered by secretarial, library, and administrative staff of the NIAS. Special thanks are due to Patty Schevy and Ton Hoenselaars for their supportive organizational and editorial efforts. The financial support of my own research by the Ford Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study is gratefully acknowledged.
