Summary

This version is that closest to Old English Letter B and is reprinted here (with minor changes) from the edition by R. Priebsch in ‘The Chief Sources of Some Anglo-Saxon Homilies’, Otia Merseiana 1 (1899), 129–47 at 130–4.

Incipit epistola in nomine trinitatis saluatoris domini Iesu Christi quae de celo in Ierusalem cecidit per Michahelem archangelum. Ista epistola est inuenta ad portam Effrem per magnum sacerdotem cui nomen Ichor. Ipsa epistola fuit relicta ibi et ipsam exemplauit et transmisit ad Ermiam ciuitatem ad alium sacerdotem nomine Talasium. Ipse Talasius transmisit eam de Ebrea ciuitate ad alium sacerdotem cui nomen Lebonius et ipse Lebonius transmisit eam ad Capadociam ciuitatem ad alium sacerdotem nomine Iuram, et ipse Iuras transmisit eam ad Bethaniam ciuitatem ad alium sacerdotem nomine Marchabeus et ipse Marchabeus sacerdos transmisit illam epistolam ad montem sancti Michahelis archangeli et ipsa epistola per uoluntatem domini nostri Iesu Christi peruenit ad Romam ciuitatem ad locum praedestinatum ad sepulcrum sancti Petri et Pauli. Qui erant in ciuitate triduanas fecerunt in uigiliis et ieiuniis <et> in orationibus, ut pius deus perdonasset eis auxilium et sensum in corda eorum, pro quali iam ista epistola in Ierusalem et in alias ciuitates uenisset et per ordinationem domini nostri Iesu Christi inuenerunt, quia propter diem sanctum dominicum aduenisset. Quia in die sancto dominico sedentes causas indicantes iurantes, periurantes, olera in orto colligentes, pecudes mulgentes, molas tornantes, uenationes facientes: propter hoc perit mundus et propter hoc uenit iudicium dei super populum cunctum praesentem. Cognoscite, miserae animae, quia in sex diebus fecit deus coelum et terram, solem et lunam, quattuor euangelistas, mare et omnia quae in eis sunt, praeterea hominem Adam plasmauit de terra. Quia in die sancto dominico requieuit, et nunc sic debent peccatores et iusti, sicut angeli requiescunt in coelo. Et rogo uos, expurgate uos in uigiliis et ieiuniis, in orationibus ad ecclesias meas ambulate, cruces per omnes domos aras ponite, caput cum cinere spargite, triduanam facite, sicut liberabit uos dominus. Miseri populi, arguite uos, dirigite et emite uobis regnum dei, quia cottidie mors ante oculos uestros est. Suspiciosa non sit epistola ista. Si bene feceritis, de manu inimica liberati eritis.
