Summary
This chapter introduces pharmacologic mechanisms of action of some of the major mood-stabilizing drugs. Each commonly prescribed drug is highlighted with dosing strategies, side effect profiles, drug interactions that warrant caution, and some other potentially valuable prescribing tips. Drug introductions are followed by particular mechanisms of action hypothesized to contribute to each drug's efficacy. By combining knowledge of symptoms from Chapter 1 and knowledge of neurobiology from Chapters 2 and 3, the reader can now begin to match malfunctioning brain mechanisms to complementary mechanisms in mood-stabilizing drugs; this is the fourth step in our treatment-based algorithm. Potential classes of agents for new and future mood stabilizers are also described in this chapter.
