Summary
The treatment of ADHD will depend on the age and the symptoms of the patient. While stimulants have proven efficacious in all patient types, they are not always the first choice medication, due to their stigma as leading to drug abuse or diversion. Newer non-stimulant treatments have proven efficacious and are gaining momentum in the treatment of ADHD. This chapter will go over the different medications— and their various formulations—available for ADHD patients, and explain the mechanisms of action of these drugs. This chapter is divided into two sections, with Section 1 covering the stimulant medications, and Section 2 covering the nonstimulant medications.
