Introduction to the 1955 Edition
Summary
Sarah Schenirer established the great sanctification of the divine name in our generation—the Bais Yaakov movement. May her memory be blessed!
FOR MANY YEARS we dreamed of republishing the collected writings of Sarah Schenirer, of blessed memory, and circulating her published work to the Jewish masses. So our joy is very great, now that this dream is coming true.
This book is a treasure house of deep Torah thoughts, exalted insights, and marvellous ethical teachings. These are words that emerged from a pure heart, and thus make a deep impression in the heart of the reader.
We hope that this book will be an inspiration for the Jewish daughter in America, as it was in Europe.
A Word to All the Students of the Bais Yaakov Schools
Dear children,
It is difficult to express the emotions with which we, the students of Sarah Schenirer, may she rest in peace, pass along this book to you. Who among you has not heard the name Sarah Schenirer? A holy shudder runs through us just hearing the sound of her name. Her radiant countenance rises before our eyes now. She was the living embodiment of ‘worship the Lord with gladness’ [Ps. 100: 2]—to which she continually called us. In her eyes—a holy fire. On her face— a loving smile. She was a great woman. One breathed a holy spirit in her presence, and whoever stood by her side was incapable of concealing any evil thoughts in their mind. Something in oneself was elevated just by being in her presence.
With what love she spoke with each one of us! We did not feel that we were just one of thousands of Bais Yaakov girls, but rather as if each of us alone existed for her, that our mother was worrying ‘only about me’.
Later, when we left the Bais Yaakov seminary in Kraków, she found time to write letters to each of us and to our students. Imagine our joy when we received a letter from her—like a letter from mama. Yes, she was our mother, our mama, a true mama for every child who had even the slightest connection with Bais Yaakov, as she often said.
