Summary
Transition from childhood to adulthood of IA individuals with educational handicapping conditions requires thoughtful, well-planned scaffolding through the Individual Transitional Plan (ITP). This chapter discusses the creation of ITP at the age of 14 to 16; identification of the areas of personal strength; development and reinforcement of skills applicable to future job training or college education; reinforcement of emotional self-regulation; training in self-confidence and self-advocacy; the specificity of the ITP for international adoptees in comparison with the population at large; the structure, content, and goals for international adoptees’ ITP; specifics of occupational evaluation and development of vocational and postsecondary education goals for the IA person; and the special role of social/emotional behavior goals in ITP for the international adoptees.
