Summary
This chapter discusses the notion of therapeutic parents in the context of international adoption; principles and specific methods of therapeutic parenting: direct and mediated instruction in social skills, modeling self-regulation, organization of the environment, following certain “rules of engagement,” and collaborative problem-solving methods; overcoming the child's resistance to therapeutic parenting due to internal perception of the world as an unsafe and dangerous place to live; home-based remedial cognitive, language, and academic techniques for different ages; review of existing home-based remedial methods for academics (reading, writing, and math) and language; how to modify and adapt existing methods of home-based instructions for IA children; and SmartStart methodology as a part of therapeutic parenting – our integrative approach toward cognitive and language remediation of international adoptees ages 5 to 12 by their adoptive parents.
