In this chapter, Denmark outlines her distinguished career and highlights the benefits of keeping a positive attitude as well as being open to new opportunities. She acknowledges the difficulties of being a successful female graduate student and subsequently young working mother in the 1950/1960s – a time when women often had to make a choice between work or motherhood or find a workable balance between the two. Building on an early and enduring passion for women’s issues, she became an advocate for the psychology of women as a founding member of the Association for Women in Psychology (AWP) and through her leadership positions with the New York State Psychological Association (NYSPA) and the American Psychological Association (APA). She was elected the 1980 President of APA, as the 88th president and only the fifth woman to hold the position. Denmark concludes her chapter with advice to seize a desired opportunity whenever it presents itself, even if it is not the most opportune time.
