Summary

To achieve the object of this exceedingly abbreviated history in so few pages as are occupied with this appreciation, and to force into it the likenesses, dates, and various matters of interest and history concerning the Newbery, Raikes, Le Blanc, and McClintock families herein collected, has been a task involving much arrangement, time, expense, research, and patience.

Many interesting lines of thought have been sacrificed, because the intention has been to bring into prominence in it those members of each family who have made their history what it is, and whose names have been handed down in books of notable writers as worthy of remembrance, and have contributed to their maintenance, guidance, and stability.

This does not mean that those to whom no reference has been made deserve no mention; far from it. The history of the earlier families ceased, and available records no longer were kept, after the death in 1818 of Francis Newbery, leaving a gap of ninety-three years to the present time.

This humble effort to collect what was obtainable from every known source leaves much to be desired. It may rescue persons from oblivion and keep intact a nucleus upon which others, better qualified, may improve.

The compiling of these histories has been a long but very interesting labour of love, recalling memories of relatives who have passed away and mentioning others who remain. The printing of two hundred copies at 8s. 6d. each has been costly.
