Summary

The summons of the clergy to a parliament on 15 July 1321

Frater Iohannes, [Dei gratia Norwicensis episcopus], archidiacono Norwicensi et eius officiali [salutem, gratiam et benedictionem]. Literas domini episcopi Londoniensis mandatum domini archiepiscopi continentes recepimus sub hac forma: Venerabili fratri Domino Iohanni episcopo Norwicensi, Stephanus, episcopus Londoniensis salutem etc. Literas et mandata reverendi in Christo patris ac domini Domini Walteri, Dei gratia Cantuariensis archiepiscopi, totius Angliae primatis, quarto Kalendarum Iunii [29 May 1321] recepimus in haec verba:

Walterus, permissione divina Cantuariensis archiepiscopus, totius Angliae primas, venerabili fratri Domino Stephano, Dei gratia Londoniensi episcopo, salutem et fraternam in Domino caritatem. Nuper dominus noster rex, vocatis ad se praelatis, quibusdam comitibus et proceribus ac aliis de concilio suo peritis tune praesentibus, negotia sua ac regni sui diligentius pertractans, pro feliciori expeditione eorundem ex deliberato concilio parliamentum suum apud Westmonasterium a die Nativitatis Sancti Iohannis Baptistae proximo futuro ad tres septimanas [15 July 1321] tenere decrevit ac etiam ordinavit. Et quia pro negotiis arduis, statum totius regni sui et incolarum eiusdem contingentibus, praesentiam nedum praelatorum sed etiam decanorum et priorum ecclesiarum cathedralium ac archidiaconorum, capitulorum, ecclesiarum cathedralium singularum et cleri nostrae Cantuariensis provinciae in agitatione eorundem necessariam esse reputavit, ne per ipsorum absentiam contingat huiusmodi tractanda negotia clerum totius nostrae Cantuariensis provinciae in forma praesecripta convocari faceremus ad diem et locum antedictos, ad tractandum super ipsis et consentiendum his quae tune salubriter ordinari contingent in eodem. Nos igitur tanto promptius tantoque favorabilius votis regiis inclinantes, quanto negotium de quo agitur Ecclesiam Anglicanam, regnum et regni incolas, tarn personas ecclesiasticas quam laicas omnes proculdubio contingit, prout haec apud omnes fore credimus notrorie divulgata, quoque ad id faciendum ex necessitate curae nobis incumbentis novimus nos teneri cum quibusdam confratribus et coepiscopis nostris habito super hoc tractatu pleniori regiis rogatibus more consueto duximus ut debuimus annuendum.

Quocirca vestrae fraternitati committimus et mandamus quatenus cum debita celeritate confratribus et coepsicopis nostrae Cantuariensis ecclesiae et provinciae suffraganeis, vice et auctoritate nostra, iniungatis seu faciatis iniungi, ut iidem episcopi omnes et singuli in suis diocesibus citent seu citari faciant peremptorie decanos et priores ecclesiarum cathedralium ac archidiaconos,
