The royal writ summoning the clergy

Rex venerabili in Christo patri Willelmo, eadem gratia archiepiscopo Eboracensi Angliae primati, salutem. Cum magnificus princeps Philippus, rex Franciae consanguineus noster et quamplures alii reges et principes catholici, zelo devotionis accensi ad recuperandum haereditatem Dominicam de manibus inimicorum crucis Christi ad terram sanctam iam ordinaverint iter suum et nos instanter requisierint ut una cum ipsis ad dictas partes ex causa praedicta velimus personaliter proficisci, nos iter praedictum assumentes, multum cordi ordinavimus parliamentum nostrum apud Westmonasterium die Lunae proximo post festum Sancti Gregorii papae proximo futurum [16 March 1332] tenere et vobiscum ac cum ceteris praelatis, magnatibus et proceribus regni nostri super dicto itinere et aliis negotiis nos et statum dicti regni ac aliarum terrarum nostrarum specialiter tangentibus habere colloquium et tractatum, vobis igitur in fide et dilectione quibus nobis tenemini firmiter iniungendo mandamus quatenus, omni excusatione voluntaria cessante, dictis die et loco personaliter intersitis nobiscum et cum ceteris praelatis, magnatibus et proceribus praedictis super praemissis tractaturi, vestrumque consilium impensuri, et hoc, sicut nos et honorem nostrum ac tranquillitatem et quietem regni nostri diligitis, nullatenus omittatis. Scientes pro certo quod nisi evidens et manifesta necessitas id exposcat non intendimus procuratores seu excusatores pro vobis admittere ea vice propter arduitatem negotiorum praedictorum. Et praemuniatis priorem et capitulum ecclesiae vestrae Beati Petri Eboracensis, archidiaconos, totumque clerum vestrae diocesis quod iidem prior et archidiaconi in propriis personis suis dictumque capitulum per unum, idemque clerus per duos procuratores idoneos plenam et sufficientem potestatem ab ipsis capitulo et clero habentes dictis die et loco intersint ad faciendum et consentiendum his quae tune ibidem de communi consilio divina favente dementia contigerit ordinari. Teste rege apud Westmonasterium, vicesimo septimo die Ianuarii [27 January 1332]. Per ipsum regem.

A similar writ was sent to the bishops of Durham and Carlisle, as well as to the abbots ofSt Mary (York), Selby, Whalley, Fountains, Furness and Rievaulx, and to the priors of Bridlington and Gisburn.

On 26 February 1332 Beverley Minster appointed Sir Richard ofOttringham to represent it at the election in York Minster on Saturday 29 February 1332 of two clergy proctors for the parliament at Westminster on Monday 16 March 1332.
