Summary

The bishop of Worcester's certificate

Dated 14 January 1558, it names the following:

Seth Holland, dean of Worcester.

Peter Vannes, archdeacon of Worcester.

William Turnebull, B. C. L., vicar-general and

Thomas Ardern, vicar of Hartlebury, proctors for the clergy.

[150] Convocatio sive sacra synodus convocatorum auctoritate brevis regis Philippi et Mariae celebrata per Dominum Reginaldum Pole cardinalem archiepiscopum Cantuariensem etc., anno Domini 1557 [vicesimo] primo Ianuarii, et anno Paulipapae quarti tertio

Eodem die, praesidens archiepiscopus, inter octavam et nonam applicuit in itinere suo apud scalam aquaticam comitis Henrici Huntingdon contiguam ripae nuncupatae Paul's Wharf, ibique ab advocatis et procuratoribus ceterisque ministris curiae suae Cantuariensis acceptus, pedibus ambulans deductus fiiit ad fores australes ecclesiae cathedralis Divi Pauli Londoniarum. Quam cum ingressus fiiisset, reverendus pater dominus episcopus Londoniensis mitra et aliis insigniis pontificalibus ornatus, plerique duodecim episcopi suffraganei, vestibus suis amicti, una cum decano et toto capitulo eiusdem ecclesiae, capis ornatis, eum acceperunt ad scamnum decenter ornatum, et infra foras eiusdem ecclesiae situm, apud quod, idem reverendissimus ab eodem Londoniis antistite [151] aqua benedicta aspersus, expositis et deosculatis evangeliis, post hymnum dictum ab episcopis et aliis in quorum primo, et inde ad suum altare perductus fiiit ubi, brevi oratione salutato Dei nomine rursus ad stallum decani reductus fuit, missa deinde de Spiritu Sancto ad summum altare celebrataper episcopum Londoniensem in pontificalibus, habebatur contio Latina in choro ab Iohanne Harpsfield archidiaconum Londoniensem, accepto sibi themate: ‘Ite in castellum quod contra vos est etc.’ Peracta contione, reverendissimus, comitantibus eum suffraganeis, accessit ad domum capitularem, ibique sedens pro tribunali, assidentibus illi duodecim suffraganeis suis episcopis, videlicet Londoniensis, Eliensis, Wintoniensis, Norwicensis, Bathonensis et Wellensis, Wigorniensis, Cicestrensis, Petriburgensis, Exoniensis, Roffensis, Menevensis, Gloucestrensis, Asaphensis et Lincolniensis.

Idem dominus Londoniensis exhibuit suum certificatorium supra executione mandati monitorii, una cum nominibus episcoporum et praelatorum Cantuariensis provinciae etc., tenor cuius certificatorii una cum brevi [ 152] regio et cognominibus citatorum ibidem inseritur. Qui reverendissimus etc., quo lecto per Henricum Cole cancellario, reverendissimus omnes absentes et iustas causas non allegantes pronuntiavit contumaces, reservando poenas in proximam sessionem.
