Summary
Following the first two thematic and framing chapters, the book unfolds chronologically. This chapter takes us into post-Napoleonic Prussia to 1845, when the Association of Saint Charles Borromeo, or Borromäusverein, was formed. The bishops charged this association with establishing an exclusive reading regime of pious books. After discussing the laity’s interest in these books, the chapter appreciates the evidence of pervasive book rebellion among common readers.
