Summary
The last chapter of the book is on the Near East Foundation and the ideas of modernization, of technical assistance and proto-development. It connects the activities of the NEF with domestic and colonial experiences of some of its predecessors such as the Phelps Stokes Fund. It shows the extent to which humanitarian visions and practices were based on experiences in the American South on behalf of autochthonous populations and African Americans.
