from Part II - Der neuen Gedichte anderer Teil / The New Poems: The Other Part

Dedicated to Richard Beer-Hofmann
Like pampered princes, windows long have seen
what often deigns to stir us up inside:
the city, which — whenever there's a sheen
of sky that strikes a feeling of the tide —
takes shape as if it would not be that way.
And there are opals every morning shows
her — opals that she wore just yesterday;
reflections drawn from the canal in rows —
reminding her of shimmering days like those.
And only then does she consent to play
the nymph that can conceive of Zeus. There ring
out at her ears her earrings. But she raises
San Giorgio Maggiore as she gazes,
idly smiling, into that lovely thing.
Spätherbst in Venedig
an deinen Blick.
