Summary
The trigeminal nerve is the largest of the twelve cranial nerves. After traveling anterior from its origin in the pons to the trigeminal ganglion (central hub), it splits into three main branches: ophthalmic (V1), maxillary (V2), and mandibular (V3), which provide sensation to the face (where you would feel a lover’s touch). The nerve also provides motor innervation to the muscles of mastication, thus helping with chewing (crushing grub).
