—Anon.It must have struck every reader of naval history and biography, that, of the early services of many of our most distinguished officers, it frequently happens that very little is known. Thus it is with respect to the late Sir William Rowley. He was promoted to the rank of commander, in the Biddeford frigate, as far back as the 26th of June, 1716; but, in consequence of the long interval of peace which ensued, his subsequent appointments and commands are not recorded, for several years.
In the month of January, 1742, Captain Rowley commanded the Barfleur, of 90 guns; in which, at that time, he sailed with Commodore Lestock's squadron to the Mediterranean, to reinforce Admiral Haddock. He arrived at Port Mahon about the 1st of February, when Admiral Haddock resigned the command to the Commodore, who was consequently promoted to a flag in the month of March following.
During the early months of the year, the squadron was chiefly employed in watching the motions of the Spanish fleet, which was in Toulon. In May, Vice-admiral Mathews arrived, and took the chief command.
