Summary
This chapter examines the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood’s involvement in the armed uprising after 2011. It is shown that although the Brotherhood decentralised its activities significantly after 2011, the armed conflict revealed the weight of the burden the Brotherhood still carries from its earlier and still-unprocessed 1970s and 80s militarisation. This has represented a major barrier to the Brotherhood participating effectively in the 2011 uprising as it has been unable to claim a significant stake in the success of those on the ground, hampering its ability to use the uprising as a vehicle to win back its base and credibility.
