Summary

The scientific creeds of Social Darwinism and eugenics offered general models for constructing an ordered and developing society. As such, science and medicine provided an alternative to party politics, by forming a basis for collectivist social policies to remedy social ills. Whereas the state was reluctant to intervene in industry and commerce in order to limit the illeffects of industrialization, eugenicists planned intervention in family life and sexuality. The concept of a fit and healthy social organism provided a means for realizing renewed stability, social integration and national power.

(Weindling 1)
