The question of Liszt’s national identity in an age of rising nationalism poses historiographical challenges. Liszt grew up speaking German, like most residents of the western region of historical Hungary where he was born, and as an adult, he adopted French as his preferred language. He left Hungary as a child to launch his career, and though he began renewing his links to Hungary after seventeen years’ absence, he lived there only briefly and never really knew the language.
