Summary
This chapter asks, ‘what should we protect?’ when designing institutions for future generations. First, it outlines an approach to defining a central ‘problem’ that such institutions might address, inspired by the ideas of democracy and of sustainable development. It then briefly considers the case for an institutional response to the problem and delves into three domains (political, intergovernmental, and legal) where reasoning about future generations reveals a variety of approaches to considering them. Finally, the piece sets out some thoughts on possible functions and ways of working for institutions for future generations so that they serve both democracy and sustainable development.
