Summary

This chapter brings together work on transcendental awareness and work on emotions which have been described as temporary I-positions. It explores the relationship between emotions as influential ways of positioning and awareness as a factor of depositioning. The chapter shows how awareness can play a central and productive role in dealing with emotions. The space of the self, temporarily devoid of content, can become a vital experience in the coaching of emotions. Work on emotions needs space of awareness and, the other way around, a meaningful place of awareness in everyday life needs recognition of emotions and I-positions. The chapter starts with an exposition of a stage model as a procedure of working on emotions in coaching, counselling and training and shows how awareness can be included in this model, in such a way as to offer not only going into emotions and positions but also going beyond them.
