Summary

‘Fathoming someone’s innermost motives is no easy matter.’ It is with these apposite words that Cornelis Struyker Boudier (1937–2015), professor of philosophical anthropology at Nijmegen University in the Netherlands, began his reflections on the ideas and vision of William Duynstee. He believed that every life has its blind spots, which, for lack of evidence to remedy them, stay there for good. As he saw it, Duynstee’s life was also subject to these blind spots. My sketch of Willem Duynstee’s life and work is therefore doomed to fall hopelessly short.
