Summary

In the concluding chapter, we revisit the major stereotypes about the nature of grammatical complexity, the grammatical characteristics of academic writing, and academic writing as a locus of grammatical innovation. We summarize how the evidence presented in the book has problematized each one of these stereotypes. The chapter then turns to implications for applied linguistics, discussing these findings as they relate to language teaching, as well as to studies of language development and how to assess that development.
