Summary
SEITDEM DIE JUNGE AKADEMISCHE DISZIPLIN der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung im 19. Jahrhundert die “Deutsche Klassik” zur Kompensation einer schmerzlich vermissten nationalen Einheit erfunden hat, dienten Goethe und Schiller zur Orientierung in einer nahezu unüberschaubaren Vielzahl von Problemlagen. Dabei war, in höherem Maße als beim sittlichen “Freiheitsdichter” Schiller, der Orientierung an Goethe stets auch ein Moment der Desorientierung, ja Verstörung eingeschrieben—etwa weil Goethe politisch weniger zuverlässig gewesen sei, oder aus Gründen unterstellter Unsittlichkeit. Heute, zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts ist eines jedenfalls deutlich: Weder Germanistik noch German studies taugen wirklich als Wegweiser in den Wirren einer späten (Post-)Moderne. Vielmehr ist besonders die deutsche Germanistik im Gefolge des linguistic turn in den Strudel einer Vielzahl von turns geraten. Wenn auch weder als landmark noch als Leuchtturm—als eines kann auch Goethe dabei aber immer noch dienen: als Indikator und als Prüfstein für turns oder methodische Paradigmen.
Seit den letzten Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts werden, im Zuge eines postcolonial turn, Diskurse der postcolonial studies und deren zentrale Texte—darunter etwa Homi K. Bhabhas The Location of Culture (1994)—verstärkt auch im deutschen Sprachraum rezipiert. Im Falle einer weiteren Gründungsurkunde dieser Diskurse, Edward W. Saids Orientalism (1978), kam es dabei zunächst einerseits zu heftigen Abstoßungsreaktionen, andererseits zu Hinweisen auf blinde Flecken: So heißt es etwa bei James Clifford, aber auch in vielen deutschsprachigen Reaktionen, Saids Nachweis des Orientalismus westlicher Diskurse sei in Teilen selbst orientalistisch, indem er genau einen solchen realen homogenen Orient voraussetze, dessen Konstruktion er den anderen, den Orientalisten, nachweise.
