John Gay's Achilles was first performed posthumously at Covent Garden on 10 February 1733 with Thomas Salway (d. 1743) in the title role. The Country Journal of 17 February noted that the ballad opera attracted ‘a crowded and splendid audience’ at its premiere, and it continued its run for over a month (Winton 2015, 157–158).
