Summary
En 1916, se cumplía el tercer centenario de la muerte de las dos “glorias literarias” de Inglaterra y España: William Shakespeare y Miguel de Cervantes. A pesar del contexto bélico, las autoridades diplomáticas británicas y españolas aprovecharon este aniversario para realizar una serie de actos conmemorativos y mejorar sus relaciones bilaterales. A finales de ese año, y como complemento a estas celebraciones, se creaba la Anglo-Spanish Society, que, desde entonces, ha contribuido a estrechar los lazos culturales entre ambos países.1
Cuando se cumplen cien años de su fundación, parece un buen momento para reflexionar sobre su historia y determinar la influencia que ha tenido en las relaciones hispano-británicas. Los actuales socios de la hoy llamada British-Spanish Society han confiado en mí para llevar a cabo esta tarea y mi primer agradecimiento va dirigido a todos ellos. Mención especial merecen Amy Bell, María Ángeles Jiménez-Riesco, Albert Jones y Jimmy Burns Marañón por sus comentarios a los diferentes borradores de este texto, así como Denise Holt y Stephen Wright que respondieron amablemente a mis preguntas. También debo recordar que el interés de Adrian Wright y John Scanlan por el pasado de la sociedad me ha facilitado mucho mi investigación, que se ha nutrido de la documentación que ellos han compilado o generado sobre este tema. A su vez, Beatriz Gago y Virginia Cosano han puesto a mi disposición la abundante información que el Instituto Cervantes de Londres conserva sobre esta corporación centenaria. A todos y a otros tantos que olvido, quiero expresarles mi más sincera gratitud.
Asimismo, debo agradecer a la Embajada española en Londres y especialmente, a Fidel López por su apoyo y sugerencias, así como al Ministerio de Educación Cultura y Deportes de España que ha hecho posible esta publicación a través del programa Hispanex.
