Summary
Chrislam, NASFAT, Ijo Orunmila, the Grail Movement, and Eckankar’s crossing of religious boundaries raises the larger question as to what ‘religion’ is. While the focus in the previous chapters was on rethinking established ways of studying religion in order to offer a fresh perspective on religious pluralism, Chapter 7 asks what place ‘religion’ has in the anthropology of religion. I conclude that by charting the idiosyncratic ways in which religion is lived in the megacity – often marked by ambiguity, inconsistency, and contradiction – we can develop new ground in the field of religion from which something fresh can sprout.
