Summary
In Part II, five Kamigata classics – Kuchi ireya (Employment Agency), Hichidanme (Act Seven), Hyakunenme (Hundredth Year), Tachigire senkō (Time’s Up Incense), and Tako shibai (Octopus Kabuki) – are presented in English translation. Through this small selection, readers will be able to observe special elements that are associated with the art. All these are merchant stories. All the stories selected for this chapter are unmistakably ‘Kamigata’ in that they are energetic and musical, not to mention other points. The stories also provide entertaining illustrations of how merchants are targeted by rakugo humor.
