Summary
The ‘āqila is an institution that relates to the sanctity of the believer’s life, the relationship between believers, and the foundations of the social order. Its evolution has not been divorced from historical processes, but is rather a response to them. I have tried to show how this essential Islamic institution was shaped and reshaped within various historical contexts. One such context is the transformation of Islamic law into a branch of religion.
