Summary

“And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as to babes in Christ … For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?”

Christian Bible, KJV, I Corinthians 3:1, 3.

“Within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders … All these evil things come from within and defile the man.”

Christian Bible, KJV, Mark 7:21, 23.

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: For they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God; Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.”

Christian Bible, KJV, Matthew 5:6–10.

***

On the third Sunday after Easter in 1899 about forty miles southwest of Atlanta near Newnan, Georgia, a white crowd burned to death a black laborer known as Sam Hose. The atrocity blended anger, contempt, brutality, festivity, and satisfaction into a mood just beyond comprehension. “Glory!” shouted an excited man enraptured by the intensity of the moment, “Glory be to God!!”
