Summary

Letters from former students invariably stated that they welcomed the opportunity to put down details of their student lives, and what was sent often included extensive details of life before and after studies at Liverpool. Such biographical details are only summarised below, and recollections relating to individual student friends have often been excluded, pro bono publico. Even so, there was far too much material to publish in full, and what follows is limited to extracts from reminiscences. Matters repeated in a number of accounts are included in only one, as far as possible. What the selection tries to express is the variety of student experience: study, leisure, practical survival, the city context. We move back by decades and years.

1980s

I remember when the professor was supposed to give a lecture and we all sat in the lecture theatre awaiting his arrival but he didn't turn up. Minutes passed, occupied by the usual student chat. Eventually, we began to pack up to leave when he dashed in and hurried to the lectern. ‘Apparently I was supposed to give a lecture today but I forgot and I haven't any notes with me, so I'll just briefly outline what I was going to talk about.’ He stepped away from the lectern, and hands clasped behind his back, he paced up and down and began to speak. And for a full hour, he spoke to us with fluency, enthusiasm and confidence. … My last ever meeting with the professor occurred on my graduation day. After the ceremony, when we were all spilling out of the Philharmonic Hall, I spied him and went to bid my farewell.
