Summary
Music becomes the indispensible means of achieving a genuine intercultural dialogue between human beings from very different nations and religions, but who nevertheless share a common language of music, spirituality and beauty.
The lights die out and an air of expectation fills the dark concert hall. As a single bright light is lit on a podium at the back of the stage a man lifts his magnificent shofar in the air and the sound of the ancient ram's horn fills the hall. The roaring cry is answered by six other shofars and medieval drums beating a captivating rhythm from balconies on both sides of the stage. This is the “Fanfare of Jericho,” a reconstruction of the sounds that tore down the walls of this city more than 3000 years ago.
It is the opening night of the concert Jerusalem: The City of the Two Peaces in Barcelona, the 6th of April, 2008. We are about to enter on a musical journey to Jerusalem – the city of holy union and bitter conflict in the three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The driving force behind this musical encounter, viol player, conductor and early music specialist Jordi Savall, has created a dialogue forum with roots in the cultural heritage and the images of holiness shared by the Abrahamic faiths.
