Summary
Subthreshold anxiety is defined as a condition in which anxiety symptoms, although present, do not meet all of the diagnostic criteria for anxiety disorder as specified in the international classification systems for mental disorders (i.e., the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) or the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10)). Over time, several terms have been used interchangeably to characterize anxiety symptoms in older adults, the most common being subthreshold anxiety, subclinical anxiety, subsyndromal anxiety disorders, and anxiety disorder not otherwise specified (ADNOS). In this chapter, we review epidemiological data and treatment strategies for subthreshold anxiety in later life. The term “subthreshold anxiety” will include all of the aforementioned conditions.
