Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become essential for qualitative researchers to adopt online interviews for data collection. However, ensuring the validity of the interview protocol is no easy task, especially when the research involves people with intellectual disabilities. With these unique challenges, we attempted to validate the interview protocol to ensure the trustworthiness of the data. An online semi-structured interview protocol was developed and refined by integrating the Interview Protocol Refinement (IPR) Framework into a seven-step refinement process. A pilot test was conducted via video conference with five participants across five different groups. From the current pilot test, insights gained include (1) rephrasing the interview questions to assume casual conversation; (2) having a contingency plan in case of technical failure; (3) refining probes and follow-up questions; and (4) enhancing the reliability of proxy in interviewing person with Down syndrome. It is essential to develop a valid and reliable interview protocol to ensure a trustworthy qualitative finding. The process should be reflective and reiterative and should always be done in such a manner.

The purpose of this chapter is to speculatively explore the future of digital platforms and how they transform the nature of many conventional markets. Digital platforms create novel connections between actors in multi-sided markets, whilst generating and capitalizing on vast amounts of data. Platforms are thus not just match but market-makers, exercising asymmetric power over their multi-sided users whilst framing the institutional and regulatory environment in which they operate. However, platforms are also the outcome of the market shaping activities enrolling a variety of actors, and may involve multiple economization modes (e.g., market, gift giving). The chapter draws upon examples of retail digital platforms to develop a conceptual discussion of the role of platforms in the contemporary economy and considers their implications for the future of markets and market-making. The dual purpose of this chapter is to examine what the rise of digital platforms means for Market Studies and what a Market Studies perspective brings to the study of platforms. We propose and discuss three specific themes at the intersection of Market Studies and digital platforms.

In those few instances in the Iliad in which the epic poet uses epíkouros to characterize Greek alliances, the poet does so within a certain Aeolian framing – cataloguing Aeolian contingents participating in the siege of Troy and, inversely, describing the search for Achaean allies to offer warrior aid in an epic assault on a great Aeolian city.

Prognostication in patients with acute neuromuscular disorders presenting to the intensive care unit (ICU) can be challenging, even for experienced providers. The various neuromuscular conditions that result in severe limb and respiratory weakness are heterogeneous with regard to their pathophysiology, natural history, and response to therapy. Furthermore, many patients with respiratory weakness require ventilatory support and can have relatively protracted ICU and hospital stays where systemic complications, such as delirium, hospital-acquired infections (particularly in immunosuppressed patients), deep venous thromboses and thromboembolism, sedation requirements, pre-existing diagnoses, affective disorders, and immobilization may all confound the ability to predict long-term recovery. Yet, outcome data on some of the most common etiologies of neuromuscular weakness in the ICU, including myasthenia gravis (MG), Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS), ICU-acquired weakness (ICUAW), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is available and can aid tremendously in guiding prognostication when taken in the context of the individual patient’s unique clinical condition.

This chapter addresses symmetry’s implications for separation of powers and federalism. It suggests that some major structural questions, such as the long-running debate over the president’s authority to fire or “remove” executive officers, hold an intensity out of step with their current political stakes. By contrast, other recent decisions, particularly those limiting agency authority over “major” policy questions and intensively reviewing the reasoned justification for certain policies, threaten to enable selective judicial disapproval of policies favored by progressives rather than conservatives. A preference for symmetry should support limiting or reconsidering these decisions. With respect to federalism, symmetry should likewise encourage the development of doctrines that grant parallel opportunities and protections to rival “red” and “blue” states dominated by either the Democratic or Republican Party.

The chapter begins with a description of the multiple discriminatory legislation against the Jews enacted soon after the Nazi takeover in 1933. It then considers the ambivalent situation of the Jews in the following years, as told in the autobiography of the historian Peter Gay (Fröhlich), by then a high-school pupil in Berlin. While he and his family were only marginally affected by the Nazi acts of discrimination, most other Jews greatly suffered under this policy, as well as from the social exclusion associated with it and finally from the general economic hardship at the time. In fact, by the November (1938) Pogrom, Jews could no longer be seen as Germans. Could they still reflect German history – as they did throughout previous periods, according to this book? The chapter tries to handle this question by first briefly describing the history of the Holocaust and then dealing more fully with the historiography of this period, written since the end of the war till today.
