Haitian writers produced a broad array of compelling texts during the nineteen years their country was under direct US rule. Today, it has become commonplace to identify Haitian literary production during that time as one of resistance. However, Haiti’s occupation-era literature is incredibly diverse. Many works from the period do not engage with the occupation at all, focusing instead on historical events, domestic dramas, or romance. In addition to thematic diversity, texts of this period reflect a variety of genres and forms. Some poets chose to experiment formally whereas others chose to create within the confines of fixed forms such as sonnets. Essayists displayed diverse ideological and political positions. This chapter offers a brief overview of Haitian literary works published during the US occupation of the country, from 1915 to 1934.

Chapter 8 provides an introduction to Gaussian measures on a Banach space from the point of view that originated in the work of N. Wiener and was further developed by L. Gross and I. Segal. The underlying idea is that, even though it cannot fit there, the measure would like to live on the Hilbert space (the Cameron–Martin space) for which it would be the standard Gauss measure, and it is in that Hilbert space that its properties are encoded. A good deal of functional analysis is required to carry out this program, and the estimate that makes the program possible is X. Fernique’s remarkable exponential estimate. Included are derivations of M. Schilder’s large deviations theorem for Brownian motion and V. Strassen’s function space version of the law of the iterated logarithm, both of which confirm the importance of the Cameron–Martin space.

From the unique N = 1 11-dimensional supergravity, all the other supergravities in lower dimensions are thought to be obtained. To obtain the seven-dimensional gauged supergravity, we first describe a first-order formulation of 11-dimensional supergravity. Then, we describe a nonlinear ansatz, leading to a consistent truncation. The concepts of consistent truncation and nonlinear ansatze are described, and the linearized ansatz on S4 and the spherical harmonics on S4 are reviewed. Relatedly, we describe the Lagrangians and transformation rules for the (maximal) N = 8 d = 4, N = 8 d = 5, and N = 4 d = 7 gauged supergravities, the massive type IIA 10-dimensional supergravity, type IIB 10-dimensional supergravity, and some general properties of gaugings, in particular the non-compact ISO(7) gauging. We end with modified supergravities: the one with SO(1, 3) × SU(8) local Lorentz covariance in 11 dimensions, the generalization known as exceptional field theory, and the geometric approach to supergravity, in particular d'Auria and Fré’s 11-dimensional supergravity with OSp(1|32) invariance.

Although the 13 United States courts of appeals are the final word on 99 percent of all federal cases, there is no detailed account of how these courts operate. How do judges decide which decisions are binding precedents and which are not? Who decides whether appeals are argued orally? What administrative structures do these courts have? The answers to these and hundreds of other questions are largely unknown, not only to lawyers and legal academics but also to many within the judiciary itself. Written and Unwritten is the first book to provide an inside look at how these courts operate. An unprecedented contribution to the field of judicial administration, the book collects the differing local rules and internal procedures of each court of appeals. In-depth interviews of the chief judges of all 13 circuits and surveys of all clerks of court reveal previously undisclosed practices and customs.

Poor memory for this time due to repeated admissions, ill-health, and ECT. I was acutely aware and frightened of detention under the Mental Health Act, and of compulsory treatment. This chapter explores the interplay between Christian ambivalence and the law from the late Middle Ages to the period of emancipation. I begin my discussion by exploring how theological arguments about Jewish inferiority and difference entered both canon law and secular laws during the late medieval period, turning Christian supersessionism into Christian domination in the sociolegal realm. I also consider the increasing racialisation of Jewish difference through the purity of blood doctrine that solidified boundaries between Jews and Christians in Spain at a time when large numbers of Jews had converted to Christianity. Focusing on the crucial period of Jewish emancipation, I then trace how Christian ambivalence further seeped into the secular legal imagination, shaping ideas about what constitutes a proper ‘religion’ in the modern secular nation state. Throughout this chapter, I explore some of the shifting dynamics of conversion and assimilation and their intersections with the racialisation of Jewish difference, which cast doubt on the possibility of Jewish equality.

Rice in West Africa is cultivated in different ecological, social, and agricultural settings. This chapter takes these diverse environments as the entry point for revisiting the history of the West Africa Rice Development Association (WARDA) and of rice research and breeding in the region. Irrigated rice emerged as a major environment of focus in the colonial period, primarily serving rice schemes in the dry zone of former French colonies Mali, Senegal, and northern Ivory Coast. Colonial projects excluded the humid uplands, a prominent rice environment across the forested zones of West Africa. Decolonization in the 1950s and 1960s initially implied a focus on national environments, followed by a regrouping into three main environments when WARDA was established in 1970. WARDA’s strategy excluded the humid uplands until the 1990s, although experts, including CGIAR advisors, argued early on for the importance of the humid uplands as a major environment for research and improvement. The chapter contrasts these findings with standard historical accounts of WARDA that highlight technical breeding capacity, a perspective fitting its radical policy change and rebranding in the 2000s.

One of the poetic features of Isaiah is its intertextuality. The authors of the later portions of the book worked with attention to the existing Isaianic texts, so that the book as a whole is woven together by common themes and vocabulary. Furthermore, the book is full of allusions to other biblical books, and was itself eventually a touchstone for later biblical authors. (Sometimes it is even uncertain which text came first!) Hyun Chul Paul Kim, in “Isaiah in Intertextual Perspective,” analyzes the book at each of these levels, and then looks forward to “points of intersectionality” between Isaiah and the modern world.

It is all too easy to view the achievements of the late republic and Augustan Age as pinnacles of Latin literature, and indeed many critics have done so. We are all entitled to our own tastes, but it is reductive if not actually misleading to think of Latin literature as something which evolves in ever more elevated stages from Livius Andronicus, Naevius, and Ennius to Vergil, Horace, and Ovid – or from the elder Cato to Cicero, Sallust, and Livy. Indeed, this was by no means the opinion of every Augustan reader, as we can see in Epistle 2.1, a poetic letter from Horace to Augustus. There the poet complains that the public prefers the classics of the second century to contemporary writing and urges Augustus to do something about this resistance to modern literature.
